HomeChallenge Regatta 2023
Following last September's harrowing experiences, we changed the weekend to June and made many presentations and sacrifices to the weather gods in hope of getting perfect sailing conditions. We got it wrong... Saturday's weather was almost identical to last time and when the conditions relented on Sunday, the wind (almost) decided it was time for a break.
Our sailors and our visitors are made of stern stuff, though, and carried on as if the story was just developing. Saturday still produced some broken boats and retirals, but the triumvirate of Morven, Ori and Vivienne shared the honours equally after three hard and very fast races. A later start allowed Sunday to produce some surprises, not least the wind more or less dying at the start of Race 5. However, it suddenly remembered our sailors and returned to provide them with a finish and another race to complete the series. Unfortunately, because we could not guarantee the conditions and, with a safety boat short, we called off the Round-the-Island race - so Race 6 was on the normal course.Excellent sailing from Vivienne in Race 6 saw her take first place overall in front of Morven and Ori, and with four Lochcarron sailors in the top five, the Challenge Shield departed Gairloch's shores yet again. So, it appears the story is just developing. We shall hopefully run our Mini-Regatta in September to restore the Round-the-Island race to its rightful position. There was good sailing from everyone that took part, with the occasional eye-catching performance. The weekend was again littered with drama, competitiveness, puzzled faces and broken boats. Hopefully there was some fun too...
