Gairloch Boat Club

Club Boats

Owning a boat isn't necessary to sail with us! Our club offers a variety of boats available for all members to use. Learn more about our boats below. Club boats and trolleys should be hosed down after use.

Members wishing to use club dinghies must have –

  • Experience to the equivalent of RYA Level 2 or Youth Stage 3
  • Or have been assessed by the club senior instructor as being competent.

Club dinghies can only be used when the safety boat is on the water. Any breakages or problems with the dinghies should be noted on the board outside the kitchen and reported to Duncan.

Toppers

Toppers are an ideal boat for beginners and can be sailed by both children and small adults single-handedly. They are simple to rig and not too heavy to move around on land. The sail can easily be reefed on land and on the water allowing it to be sailed even when it is quite windy!

Our club has six Toppers with the following rigging:

  • Mast with sail wrapped on it
  • boom
  • Daggerboard
  • Rudder

Topaz

The Topaz is similar to the Topper but has a bigger hull shape making it a more comfortable choice for adults. This boat is suitable for beginners as well as experienced sailors and can be sailed either single-handed or double-handed by both children and adults. It has a dacron mainsail which can be reefed for rougher conditions as well as a jib for something extra.

Our club has one Topaz with the following:

  • Mast with sail wrapped on it
  • Jib
  • Boom
  • Daggerboard
  • Rudder

Laser

The Laser is one of the most popular sailing dinghies. This boat is designed to be sailed single handed by adults or older children. Generally some experience is needed to sail this boat effectively as it is less forgiving than the other boats the club owns.

Our club has one Laser with the following rigging:

  • Top mast
  • Radial sail with radial bottom mast
  • 4.7 sail with 4.7 bottom mast
  • Boom
  • Daggerboard
  • Rudder

RS Fevas

An RS Feva can be sailed single handed, generally by an adult, or double handed, most often with two children or an adult helm and child crew. This boat can offer an exciting experience as it has three sails, the mainsail, jib and spinnaker. The spinnaker requires a bit of experience to operate but beginners can sail this boat with the mainsail and jib.

The club has three RS Fevas with the following:

  • Mast
  • Mainsail
  • Jib
  • Spinnaker
  • Boom
  • Daggerboard
  • Rudder

Wayfarers

The Wayfarers are the most stable and roomy boats the club owns. This boat is popular for adults with any amount of experience and can comfortably take several adults or children. The sail can be reefed and rigged with a jib or a gennaker.

The club has two Wayfarers with the following rigging:

  • Mast
  • Mainsail
  • Jib
  • Gennaker
  • Boom
  • Centreboard
